"…‘because it’s so far from everywhere else. On the way to nowhere, as somebody put it. It’s in the middle of the lonely country, and beyond the lonely country there is only the sea’ Philip Larkin Our interests are places and people on the edge, forgotten and ignored, always by water. We then observe through a particular lens, this year the PLACE is Hull and the LENS is culture. We are interested in the CULTURAL; the customs, arts, social institutions and achievements of a particular nation, people or other social group to this we add territories. …territories provide a sense of place and identity, they map our relationship with the land over time; they are part of our national heritage and each of our lives. They are sites associated with a significant event, activity, person or group of people, they range in size from thousands of acres of rural land, to historic homesteads, the sea, they can be grand estates, farmlands, public gardens and parks, college campuses, cemeteries, scenic highways and industrial sites. They are works of art, narratives of cultures and expressions of regional identity. The unit is made up of 14 second year and 17 third year architecture students and is one of 9 units in the undergraduate department of Architecture. These students stay in their chosen unit all year and work on projects with briefs set by the unit head and tutor team. As part of our investigations we arrange a site trip to give a flavour of the place and its people and eventually propose theoretical projects for. On our first trip to Hull as tutors was on the day of the Freedom Festival and we happened upon Fred Kennett’s work as part of the artists exhibitions. We were all very impressed with his fine line drawings and the images of Hull that his work captures. Our first project is to produce the Book of Hull which provides a rapid insight based on research that the students carryout before they have visited Hull; the second project is to make the Picture of Hull which is a line drawing of a place, space or object they see on their visit to Hull that fits within the theme they researched for the Book of Hull. Fred Kennett’s drawings are one of the key references for this project. We had the fortunate opportunity to visit Fred at his home where he talked about his life and work and answered lots of questions on technique, inspiration, and the stories behind some of the drawings. It was great, all 32 of us in Fred’s living room surrounded by his work. The visit to Fred Kennett was part of an action packed day which started at Spurn Point at low tide, then we visited the wonderfully eclectic Fort Paull, Fred Kennet and then Hull specifically the wharfs and banksides of the River Hull. We hope to share some of our students work with Fred by way of thanks for his time and generosity. Farida Makki "
